Description
Cale was sent to Iraq with the usual thoughts any Soldier going to war might have; being lonely away from his family, not wanting to take another human's life, and above all, the fear of never returning home. Although well trained, nothing could have prepared him for the horror he was about to face. He risks his life for weeks, focused on holding his wife and daughter in his arms again. It seems all hope is lost when he finds himself alone and adrift at sea ... but is hope really lost? Inspired by my experiences as a U.S. Army Soldier in Iraq, BLOOD ON THE SAND delves into the idea of not just surviving a zombie apocalypse but making the seemingly impossible trek home. Damned good read. Spoiler alert.This one starts with Cale. Cale is in America but this is the end of the story. Not the beginning.Cale was six months into his deployment to Iraq. He and those with him are in up armored HUMMERS. They are security for transport trucks up and down Iraq. Right now they are headed North to an FOB.Cale isn't big on killing. Oh he will do what he has to when it comes to protecting his fellow soldiers but only as a last resort. That's the reason he chose Motor Transport Operator as his MOS in the Army. He was transferred in to security for the transport trucks. His weapon is the .50 cal on top of the HUMMER.Zach is Cale's best friend. He's also the driver of the HUMMER and Cale's roommate. Zach is tall and lean and when the SHTF he turned out to be one very capable killer. A guy who figured out what was going on and how to kill the dead.Cale was of medium build and when the SHTF he turned into a leader.Right now Cale and his fellow security are on downtime after arriving at the FOB. There have been news broadcasts about sickness in Africa. Unknown the Cale and his crew this illness will change their lives and the world.So begins a damned good read.This one has Cale, Zach, Cace, Travis, Sgt. MacGregor, an attack by people the soldiers can't believe are real, a base overrun, a Zach who figures it out and tells them all to shoot the bastards in the head as that's the only way to kill the undead, a Cace who is bitten, a Travis who doesn't make it, a Cale and Zach who travel West headed for the ocean in their HUMMER, Lauren and Marie Cale's wife and daughter who survive, a house that Zach and Cale finally stop at, a Zach who clears the bottom floor, and a Cale who clears the top, a Zach who is bitten, a Cale that has to kill his best friend, a Cale who makes the coast and gets aboard a yacht the American Runner, a yacht that's loaded with supplies and water, a Cale who travels the coast, a Cale who stops in Tel Aviv to make a supply run, a Cale who finds two kids, two kids who die, a Cale who's beginning to think everyone around him is dying and its his fault, the American Runner who's engines die stranding Cale at sea,, an Egyptian sub that picks Cale up, Egyptians who are not what they appear to be and Cale doing his best to stay alive so he can get home to his wife and daughter.Five Stars. Damned good read.
