I know that other reviewers have been somewhat harsh with the latest installment of the Blood on the Stars series (Descent Into Darkness), but I'm going to fly in the face of those reviewers. Here's the thing that readers need to remember - Tyler Barron and the main characters (most of them) have been at war for more than twenty years. That's a heck of a long time and what does that even do the human psyche. Every enemy in recent books - first the Hegemony and now the Highborn - have had considerable advantages in ships and technology. Yet, Tyler and his spacers are battling on and some how they come off battered, but alive. Novels are by there nature about the characters and how the plot affects them. Tyler has been seen at his best and now we are seeing him battling fatigue, his inability to see a positive end, and even toying with suicide in the course of battle - that is, not making an effort to escape during the course of a battle. Every main character is suffering some form of despair and in some cases the morality of using a viral agent to kill off a trans-human form of humanity. Rightly so - military men/women have access to powerful weaponry that could potentially wipe humanity from the earth and so they at least need to understand the value of not using it for their own purposes - historically there have been cases of the military over-turning elected governments. Jay really gets into the mind-set of his characters and their struggles. Descent into to Darkness is a change of pace in the story and while there are still battles fought, the overarching plot-line has more to do with the characters personal struggles. Yet, there are flashes of brilliance from Tyler that saves a portion of his fleet from becoming too involved in battle, based on his well known gut-feeling. Yes, the editing of the book could be better, but I'm going for the over-all story and not nit-picking it to death over the little things. I liked this book and it made me feel empathy for the characters in their personal struggles to over-come their lack of hope in winning against a powerful foe. Looking forward to the next and concluding book in the Blood on the Stars series :)
