Gallon Drunk have discovered technology. They've slowly been replacing their DIY production techniques with a sleeker sound, as evidenced on their last album, "In the Long, Still Night" and on this new single, "Blood Is Red."Apparently this single, and the following album, "Black Milk" are for a film soundtrack. Perhaps that's why the title track is an intriguing instrumental--James Brown horns from hell, a Stonesy guitar riff, and--something new for Gallon Drunk--programmed drums. The sound IS a little more polished, but it still burns...like an oilslick on fire. "Hurricane" (both versions) puts head Drunk, James Johnston's intense, menacing vocals more up front in the mix than on previous albums. And Johnston still comes off sounding like Nick Cave's little brother (a comparison which, I'm sure, he is tired of hearing). The first version of "Hurricane" is a scorcher, following in the footsteps of "Some Cast Fire" or "Two Clear Eyes." The production on the second version (which will appear on "Black Milk") is more muted, to make room for the soulful female backing vocals on the chorus. I prefer version one, which will not appear on the album, so, as far as I'm concerned, this single was a worthwhile purchase. It's been so long since we last heard from Johnston & crew, I'm just glad they haven't given out last call. Despite numerous band changes, Johnston remains Gallon Drunk's heart and soul. I'd tap my pub-crawlin' feet to almost anything he could do.
