This is one of the most faithful adaptations of a novel for the screen I've ever watched. It retains the meandering, random qualities of the book and never makes excuses or explanations for the characters' bizarre behavior. The story of how Hazel Motes' resentment of Christ and Christianity overtakes his life is dark, grotesque and yet at times laugh-out-loud funny. The acting is amazing. My only quibble is that it's such a low budget production that 1970's Georgia has to stand in for 1940's, so the cars and clothing are anachronistic. But in a way, this adds to the weird overall charm of the film. I first streamed it on Amazon, but enjoyed it so much I invested in a physical DVD.
